I try to film this small, rare and very cute mammal in a cemetery in Vienna.
Vienna in Austria is renowned as the place to see and photograph the very rare European hamster. I have several days to find and get pictures and the first day was a little daunting. It is a huge cemetery and I had no idea where to start looking or what to look for.
However, it is a well known spot for wildlife photographers and by 1600 hours men with big lenses started to arrive in numbers. Hamsters are nocturnal or crepuscular creatures and not seen in the middle of the day.
The next day we spoke to a waiter who gave us a better spot to photograph the delightfully cute European hamster.

Capturing House Martins Collecting Mud for Nests with the OM1 Mk2 and Procapture.
Просмотров 7 тыс.День назад
House martins build their nests using mud, usually on buildings and this offers a good opportunity to photograph them. You just need a muddy puddle. Every day for a week I topped up this puddle as we did not get much rain. The House martins were coming down to it, but not as often as I would have liked. I used the Buteo single person hide for most of the pictures. The camera was the OM-1 Mk2 an...
Surprising bonus while filming a Pied flycatcher with the OM 150-600mm Lens
Просмотров 8 тыс.14 дней назад
I like to put time into one subject. I get an idea in my head that I want a singing Pied flycatcher and when I find one I am happy to sit and wait. Not only did I get the male singing, but on the same bracnh he tried to copulate with the female. I don't think he was successful, but they fell to the ground afterwards and continued to try. All filmed on the new OM 150-600mm lens which I have been...
Filming and Photographing the Little owl with the OM-1 mk2 and 150-400mm Lens
Просмотров 8 тыс.21 день назад
Little owls are becoming scarce. There are no longer any birds on the estate where I normally photograph. I visit Brine Pit Farm in Worcestershire to photograph them. www.brinepitwildlifephotography.co.uk/ They have a number of hides here suitable for photography. Little owl, Kingfisher, Kestrel, Reed bed hide and a reflection pool hide. All are well built and very photogenic. Mike Lane wildlif...
Filming and photographing the elusive Capercaillie using the OM-1 and 150-400mm lens.
Просмотров 16 тыс.28 дней назад
The Capercaillie is on the edge of extinction again in Scotland and the opportunity for photography limited. In Norway they are a common bird. It is possible to photograph them from the car on the side of the road. On this trip I did that, but also spent three nights in a hide at a lek or display ground. That is hard work and means a long wait in very cold conditions. All filmed and photographe...
Capturing Norway's Winter Birds with Pro Capture on the OM-1 Mk2 and the 150-400mm Lens
Просмотров 6 тыс.Месяц назад
I spend a week in Norway to photograph Black Grouse and Capercaillie. Inbetween time there is a fantastic bird feeder running that was full of birds, such as Bullfinch, Hawfinch, Greenfinch, Brambling, Yellowhammers and Siskin. The Black grouse had unfortunately already finished displaying at their lek, but the bird feeder partially made up for this. The Black grouse and Capercaillie tour can b...
Filming and Photographing singing birds with the OM-1 Mk2 and the 150-400mm lens

This week I look at photographing singing birds starting with a Song thrush and ending with the U.K's most famous singing bird, the Nightingale. I use the OM-1 Mk2 and the 150-400mm lens with a Rode rifle mic. I make good use of My Buteo Single Person hide. www.buteophotogear.com/ I have always enjoyed sitting in hides. Filming singing Starlings with the OM-1 MK2 and the 150-400mm lens.
Просмотров 7 тыс.Месяц назад
Starlings are not the greatest songsters in the world, but they put a lot of effort into it with a nice display of wing flapping to help the effect. I find a nice blue coloured hut where they are nesting under the roof. It makes for a nice setting. I use the OM-1 Mk2 for all the video. The AF is much improved over the Mk1 for video so I do not find myself having to use the Lumix G9 Mk2 nearly a...
My Lens is out of action, but I still need to find subjects to photograph.
Просмотров 30 тыс.Месяц назад
While my big lens is in the repair shop I still need to keep busy finding subjects to photograph and I still have the 300mm f4 lens as a backup. I put some time into finding a place to film drumming Great-spotted woodpecker and also film them excavating their nest hole. I use the Buteo single person hide on a hill side so I am almost at the same height as the birds. www.buteophotogear.com Mike ...
Finally a reason to buy an OM-1 Mk2. It does have an advantage, at least for me.
Просмотров 12 тыс.2 месяца назад
This is the third and hopefully the last film on the differences between the OM-1 Mk1 and Mk2. A watcher of my You tube channel pointed out a flaw with the OM-1 Mk1 that I was not aware of, but has almost certainly lost me pictures in the past. When you zoom with the 150-400mm the camera will not take pictures, but it is not obvious this is happening. I zoom a lot and have sometimes wondered wh...
Is the OM-1 mk2 better at AF for birds than the OM-1 Mk1? It has taken me a while to decide!
Просмотров 10 тыс.2 месяца назад
I did not rush to buy the new OM-1 M2 as the spec was not very exciting, but once the price dropped by about £450 I did. The only hope was that the AF would be better than the previous model. No other feature on the camera interested me. What I needed to test it was the rain to stop and to be in a place where lots of birds were flying around and I could spend some hours taking thousands of imag...
What do I think of the OM-1 Mk2 camera? Is it all hype or is it actually better then the Mk1for AF?
Просмотров 17 тыс.2 месяца назад
When the OM-1 Mk2 was first announced I was in no rush to buy. Nothing in the spec excited me. I waited for the price to drop by £450 before ordering one in. I have had it a few weeks now and what do I think? Mike Lane wildlife photography www.nature-photography.co.uk/
Photographing a most difficult duck. Garganey are usually a shy species this one was tame.
Просмотров 4,3 тыс.2 месяца назад
I regard Garganey as the most difficult of the common ducks to photograph in the U.K. Shy birds that normally keep a distance. This one however, was very tame and approachable. It had no legs rings on to indicate it was an escaped bird from a captive collection. I used the OM-1 Mk2 for the stills photography and the Lumix G9 Mk2 for the video. I can see little difference between the Mk1 and Mk2...

For a bit of varity I through in a couple of shots of Kingfisher and Song thrush catching their prey. Mike Lan...
